October in Brown County is the Real Deal
Indiana doesn't get a lot of love for fall foliage, but Brown County in mid-October genuinely competes with anywhere in the Midwest. The hills, the mix of maples and oaks, the way the light hits in the late afternoon — it's the only time of year we tell people to drop everything and go.
When to Go
Peak color is usually the second and third weekends of October, give or take a week depending on the weather. Check the Brown County State Park Facebook page in late September — they post weekly color updates.
Avoid the absolute peak weekend if you can. Try the weekend before or a midweek trip. The crowds thin out a lot.
Where to Camp
Brown County State Park has a huge campground (400+ sites). Even in October it usually has openings, but book a few weeks ahead if you want a specific area. The Buffalo Ridge sites have the best hill views.
If Brown County is full, Yellowwood State Forest is right next door, free or cheap, and much more rustic. No bathhouses, but if you're in the RV that doesn't matter.
What to Actually Do
The fire tower at the top of the park is the obvious view spot — go at sunset. Be ready for it to be busy. The hike to it is short but steep. Worth it.
The Trail 8 loop is a 5-mile hike with the best mix of views and creek crossings. Trails 2 and 3 are shorter and easier.
Drive Highway 46 between Nashville and Bloomington at least once during your trip. The road winds through the hills and the colors are unreal.
Nashville (the Town)
Nashville's tourist strip is a mix of legitimately good places and overpriced kitsch. Worth knowing:
- Big Woods Brewing — solid beer, good food, no surprises.
- The Hob Nob Corner Restaurant — diner-style, popular for breakfast. Show up early or expect a wait.
- Brown County Inn — dinner here is reliable. Has a real bar if you want a drink not made of pumpkin spice.
Skip the candle shops unless you really like candles. Skip the "pioneer village" experiences unless you have kids. Skip the funnel cakes if you've ever had a funnel cake before.
The Cost
For a 2-night van rental at Brown County, you're looking at around:
- Van: $390 (2 nights @ $195)
- Campsite: $40 (state park electric site)
- Park entry: $9
- Gas: ~$35 round trip from Indy
- Food: ~$60-80 (mostly cooler stuff + one nice dinner)
About $550 for a couple, or roughly the cost of one night in a Brown County B&B during peak season. Same view, more freedom.
