The Quick Version
The bed in the Explorer Van is already set up and ready to go. You don't need to convert anything or fold any seats. It's a permanent platform bed in the back with a comfortable foam mattress. Just bring your bedding and you're done.
The Setup
The bed platform runs the width of the van behind the rear seats. The mattress is a 4-inch high-density foam pad that's honestly more comfortable than a lot of hotel beds. It sleeps two adults comfortably — king-size width with a bit less length.
Storage Underneath
The bed platform is raised, and underneath is your gear storage. We keep it clean and empty for you. Toss your cooler, bags, camp chairs, and whatever else under there. It keeps the living space uncluttered, which makes a bigger difference than you'd think in a van.
The Curtains
There are blackout curtains that separate the cab from the living area and cover all the windows. Pull them closed at night for privacy and to block out light. They make a huge difference, especially if you're parked somewhere with streetlights or early morning sun.
Ventilation
Indiana summers are humid. We have a roof vent fan that pulls air through the van — use it. Crack a window on the opposite side from the vent to create airflow. On cooler nights (below 70°F), just cracking the windows is usually enough.
For really hot nights: park in shade, use the vent fan on high, and bring a USB-powered personal fan for direct airflow while you sleep.
Bedding Recommendations
- Summer (June-August): A fitted sheet and a light blanket. That's it. Maybe a flat sheet if you run cold.
- Spring/Fall: Fitted sheet + a regular comforter or a 30-40°F sleeping bag.
- Winter: We don't do many winter rentals, but if you're going for it — sleeping bags rated to 20°F, and layer up.
One More Thing
The van has LED lights inside on a dimmer switch. Great for reading at night without blinding your partner. The switch is on the wall panel near the bed — you'll see it.
