The Goal: A 3-Day Trip You Don't Need a Vacation From
Most people overschedule. They want to drive 4 hours each way, see three parks, eat at five restaurants, and somehow also relax. It doesn't work. Here's how to actually plan a long weekend that feels like a getaway.
Pick One Destination
Don't try to do a multi-stop loop on a 3-day trip. Pick one campground, drive there, set up, and then explore from there. The driving back and forth eats your trip.
Good 3-day picks within 2 hours of Indy: Brown County, Turkey Run, McCormick's Creek, Prophetstown, Patoka Lake.
Day-by-Day
Friday afternoon: Pick up the rental between 2-4pm. Get groceries on the way out of town (or before, if you have a deep cooler). Drive to camp. You'll arrive in time to set up before dark and have a relaxed first night.
Saturday: The day you actually do stuff. Hike, swim, paddle, whatever. Don't try to do everything — pick one thing in the morning and one thing in the afternoon. Eat dinner at camp or in the nearest town. Stargaze if you're somewhere dark enough.
Sunday: Pack up in the morning. One more short activity. Drive home in the afternoon. Return the rental.

If You're Bringing Kids
Slow down even more. Plan one main activity per day, max. Build in time for them to just run around the campground. Bring a backup plan for rain — a board game, cards, a movie on a tablet. Don't expect everyone to love everything. Some kids hate hiking and that's okay.
